In armed conflict, the ground is profoundly destabilized, becoming unpredictable, hostile. In this premiere AV performance of ‘Ground Loop #1 – 12 – Exercising Conflict,’ Anika Schwarzlose and Brian Mckenna combine audiovisual recordings with ground samples collected at training sites of the Dutch Army and NATO forces. Using seismic transducers and ultrasonic microphones in order to ‘hear what the ground hears’ during exercises, Schwarzlose and McKenna render perceptible hidden modes of military violence.
‘Ground Loop #1 – 12 – Exercising Conflict’ was a part of Inner Ear(th), Sonic Acts Biennial 2022‘s sound art program, and was show in the Black Box at Het HEM.
